Korean Skincare Routine for Beginners: 5 Steps That Actually Matter
Korean skincare is famous for its 10-step routines, but you don’t need that many products to get good results. The idea behind K-beauty is simple: be gentle with your skin, keep it well hydrated, and protect it from the sun. These five steps cover the basics.
Step 1: Cleanse gently
Korean cleansers are usually mild and low-pH, so they clean without leaving your skin tight.
- Beauty of Joseon Green Plum Refreshing Cleanser – a low-pH gel cleanser with green plum water, mung bean extract, centella and panthenol. It removes oil and light makeup and suits sensitive, oily and combination skin.
If you wear heavy makeup or sunscreen, you can “double cleanse” in the evening: first an oil cleanser, then a gel cleanser.
Step 2: Toner to soothe and prep
In K-beauty, a toner is a light, watery layer of hydration. It is not the harsh, alcohol-based astringent many of us remember.
- Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner – contains 77% heartleaf extract to calm the skin and balance moisture. It suits all skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin.
Pat it in with clean hands or sweep it on with a cotton pad.
Step 3: Essence for hydration and smoothness
- COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence – a lightweight essence with 96% snail secretion filtrate and sodium hyaluronate. It hydrates and soothes, and helps dull, rough skin look smoother. It suits all skin types, including sensitive skin.
Step 4: Moisturise
- SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Soothing Cream – a lightweight cream with Madagascar centella asiatica extract that calms the skin and supports the barrier. It is a good fit for sensitive or acne-prone skin.
Step 5: Sunscreen (morning only)
Korean sunscreens are known for light textures that don’t leave a white cast.
- Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ PA++++ – a lightweight sunscreen with rice extract and grain ferments.
Your K-beauty routine at a glance
Morning: cleanser → toner → essence → moisturiser → sunscreen.
Evening: (oil cleanser if needed) → cleanser → toner → essence → moisturiser.
Ready to add more?
Once your basic routine feels comfortable, add one targeted serum after your essence. For example, try a niacinamide serum for uneven tone, or a vitamin C serum for dullness. Add one new product at a time, and patch test it first.
Beginner tips
- Apply products from the thinnest to the thickest texture.
- Give each layer a few seconds to absorb.
- Consistency matters more than the number of steps.
