How to Choose a Sunscreen: SPF, PA and Textures Explained
Sunscreen is the one step dermatologists agree on for almost everyone. It helps prevent sunburn, and it helps stop dark spots and post-acne marks from getting darker. With so many labels – SPF50+, PA++++, mineral, sun stick, sun serum – choosing one can be confusing. Here is what the labels mean and how to pick the right one.
What does SPF mean?
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures protection against UVB rays, the main cause of sunburn. For everyday use, choose SPF 30 or higher. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, SPF 50 is a sensible choice.
What does PA++++ mean?
PA is a rating used mainly on Asian sunscreens for protection against UVA rays. UVA rays reach deeper into the skin and contribute to tanning, dark spots and signs of ageing. More plus signs means higher UVA protection, and PA++++ is the highest rating. On Western sunscreens, look for the words “broad spectrum”.
Mineral or chemical filters?
- Mineral (physical) sunscreens use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. They are often preferred for sensitive skin. Some can leave a white cast on deeper skin tones.
- Chemical sunscreens use organic UV filters. They usually feel lighter and leave no white cast.
Both work. The best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually wear every day.

How much sunscreen should you use?
Most people apply too little. A common guide for the face and neck is about two finger-lengths of sunscreen, or roughly a quarter of a teaspoon for the face alone. Apply it as the last step of your morning routine, before makeup.
When to reapply
- Every 2–3 hours when you are outdoors.
- After sweating heavily, swimming or towel-drying.
- If you are indoors away from windows all day, morning application is usually enough.
With a stick, use a few passes per area to apply enough product.
Quick checklist
- SPF 30 or higher (SPF 50 for long days outside).
- PA+++ or PA++++, or “broad spectrum”.
- A texture you enjoy wearing every day.
- Apply enough, and reapply when you are outdoors.
